Cat Scratch Disease

I saw a case of cat scratch disease today in the Peds ED!

It really exists... not just on board exams. The kid had huge lymph nodes in front of his ears and on his neck. We sent him out on azithromycin... his mom joked that the cats were getting revenge on him for torturing them for years.

I also saw scabies a little later and then meningococcal sepsis after that. It was quite a day for infectious diseases.

Wow! So there really is a chance that I'll see some of these IDs in real life. Learning these bugs and drugs is torture. I go over them. Know them. Come back to them a day later: I don't know them.

All I can think of is the cheesy Ted Nugent song when I hear about cat scratch disease
